Synopsis

While serving in the USO during WWII, Mumma meets Pops. She's got many suitors, but it's Pops who wins her heart. Their road is rocky though: his family sees his marriage to an orphan as beneath him and her own dreams of being more than just a wife and mother are jeopardized. But while Mumma never counted on there being challenges at every turn, those turns also never anticipated a force of nature like Mumma. Over the next fifty years, she raises four daughters, and they see her as everything from pig-headed to loving. Through their eyes, acclaimed author Cynthia Voigt paints a gorgeous portrait of Mumma in all her complexity and uses it to explore the intense, spirited connection between mothers and daughters.

I wanted to love this as much as I love Cynthia Voigt’s YA fiction, but Rida isn’t as sympathetic a protagonist as Dicey, or Izzy, or Mina, or as curmudgeonly as Gran. She is definitely a law unto herself, particularly when dealing with marrying into a Boston Brahmin family. She loves Spence truly,......more
