Synopsis

The author was born and raised in South Africa. He achieved his medical education and diploma from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and practiced Internal Medicine for 45 years in the USA, running a Cystic Fibrosis clinic, Tuberculosis clinic and Coal Miners clinic as well as a Private Practice. Volunteer experience included at the Kibogora Hospital in Rwanda. Personal interests include Wild Life photography and Ornithology and tennis instruction for his children and grandchildren.Set against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa, this powerful memoir offers a deeply personal journey through a childhood shaped by privilege and shadowed by injustice. Norman Nathan shares intimate and often startling recollections of growing up in Johannesburg during the 1950s and 60s: from idyllic suburban scenes and schoolyard adventures to witnessing brutal acts of racial violence and navigating a society divided by law and prejudice. Through vivid storytelling, Nathan introduces readers to the people who shaped his early life - African caregivers, family members, and classmates while chronicling the stark realities of military service, political awakening, and the slow unraveling of innocence. With moments of humor, heartbreak, and hope, Apartheid - South African Memories is both a personal coming-of-age story and a unique historical document. Perfect for readers of memoir, history, and social justice, this book illuminates the human cost of apartheid and the quiet courage of those who lived through it.
