Synopsis

The Sun Also Rises was Ernest Hemingway's first published novel, and was both a commercial and literary success. Much information about the plot is available online. The story follows the lives of a group of people living during the 1920's, in Paris, mainly. Many of them had lived through the hardships and horrors of the First World War, and this lent a kind of manic energy to their social lives and relationships, as though there was not enough time and maximum "living" had to be squeezed into as short a time as possible. The book provides the first view of themes which can be found in most of his books - conflict, bull-fighting, hunting, fishing, and the complexities of human relationships between the sexes as well as across cultures.

About Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.

A beautiful woman is built with curves like the hull of a racing boat. Women make swell friends. 5. If you su......more

If I were Hemingway's English teacher (or anyone's any kind of teacher) I'd say, "This reads more like a screenplay than a novel. Where are your descriptions, where is the emotion??" And he would say something like, "The lack of complex descriptions helps focus on the complexities and emptiness of th......more

I've read this book every year since 1991, and it is never the same book. Like so many things in this world, The Sun Also Rises improves with age and attention. Some readings I find myself in love with Lady Brett Ashley. Then I am firmly in Jake Barnes' camp, feeling his pain and wondering how he sta......more
