Synopsis

Just before his regiment sails off to war in the Sudan, British officer Harry Feversham quits the military. He is immediately given four white feathers as symbols of cowardice, one by each of his three best friends and one by his fiance. To disprove this grave dishonor, Harry dons an Arabian disguise and leaves for the Sudan, where he anonymously comes to the aid of his three friends, saving each of their lives. Having proven his bravery, Harry returns to England, hoping to regain the love and respect of his fiance. This suspenseful tale movingly depicts a distinctive code of honor that was deeply valued and strongly promoted by the British during the height of their imperial power.

The Heath Ledger movie makes you think this book is an action thriller. That is false. Mason's work is a look into the emotions and decisions made by extraordinary people. What war or fighting is described in this novel is described by characters who participated in it, and most of the story takes p......more

An adventure novel should earn its title, and The Four Feathers certainly does. Unexpected betrayal; a daring rescue; deus-ex-machinaed hope amidst the pit of despair; it's all here. Still, The Four is pleasantly unique, and what sets it apart from the others of its genre is its surprisingly modern d......more
