Synopsis

“There are wonders and terrors out there you can't yet imagine, and people out there you don't yet know are family.”I don’t mix well with people; I prefer the birds. I spend my time trying to find the Trickster—a finch treasured by the locals. My smart mouth, brash behavior, and being non-binary in this secluded southern town keep me on the periphery of Spastoke’s society. Fine by me. All I need are the birds and my uncle Jeremy.Until he dies, and I can’t do anything to stop it. I want to withdraw from the town into the comfort of birdwatching and forget everything. Instead, Adrian Turney, my uncle’s friend and mentor, is found dead in the woods. My only hope of unravelling the truth is Jethro; a chatty newcomer that appears earnest, but can I trust him? When my uncle appears to me in my dreams, I quickly learn what started as a search for answers is so much more: a journey into the town’s shady past to uncover a danger in the woods lost to time. Along the way, I might discover I’m not alone as I thought.—"Rue Sparks is a superb storyteller and The Fable of Wren is a testament to that. Not only is it a cleverly written mystery with gripping twists and turns and compelling characters, it's also full of heart. Reading this book feels like having someone wrap a warm blanket around your shoulders and tell you that everything will be all right."- Rita A. Rubin, Author of Amulet of Wishes

I was told that I might need tissues for this book. I was told correctly. The Fable of Wren, set in the small town of Spastoke ("East of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon line"), follows Wren, a young nonbinary individual trying to grapple with changes that are both inevitable and earth-sha......more

As I closed the book, I held it to my chest. It was the first novel I read that had a non-binary character as the lead and Wren made me feel like home. I quickly surrounded myself with Wren's found family and mourned their losses as well as my own. This book stays with you long after you've read it......more

I'm certainly not the target for this book, but that didn't detract me from enjoying the beautiful passages. The river is an open cut in the landscape. Like a wound that keeps flowing open, never able to heal. It feeds the trees, the brambles. In turn, they give way to wildlife. The book is heavy......more

Rue Sparks' creates a world and characters you can believe in. Wren has identifiable struggles, grief, loss, feeling excluded, wondering if someone can be trusted. As Wren attempts to resolve the mystery surrounding Aiden Turney's death, they discover things about themselves too. This is great writi......more

Rue Sparks’ The Fable of Wren is a fascinating novel, and I particularly enjoyed the elements of magical realism in the story. Wren is a spitfire, a survivor, and a completely likeable hero who must balance their pride and vulnerability. Truth be told, Wren isn’t good at making friends or even being......more
