Synopsis

One of the most celebrated thrillers ever written, The Day of the Jackal is the electrifying story of an anonymous Englishman who, in the spring of 1963, was hired by Colonel Marc Rodin, operations chief of the O.A.S., to assassinate General de Gaulle.France was infuriated by Charles de Gaulles withdrawal from Algeria, and there were six known attempts to assassinate the General that failed. This novel dramatizes the seventh, mostly deadly attempt, involving a professional killer for hire who would be unknown to the French Police. His code name was Jackal, his price half a million dollars, and his demand total secrecy, even from his employers. Step by painstaking step, we follow the Jackal in his meticulous planning, from the fashioning of a specially made rifle to the devising of his approach to the time and the place where the General is to meet the Jackal's bullet. The only obstacle in his path is a small, diffident, rumpled policeman, who happens to be considered by his boss the best detective in France: Deputy Commissaire Claude Lebel.

Forsyth is a master storyteller. His first attempt at non-fiction is also one of his best. A book about the OAS and their attempt to ***assinate Hitl... um, I mean de Gaulle, this audiobook weaves a tale that puts you right in the story. I do not want to give any of the plot away, so I highly recommend you listen. It will be over before you know it! Top book in fiction.

The Day of the Jackal is a very remarkable and memorable thriller – while the other novels of this sort are usually forgotten too soon this book has stuck in my head for good. It is a real duel of masterminds –one staying on the side of crime and the other serving on the side of justice. Frederick F......more

The Day of the Jackal is a true classic in the thriller genre and is also one of those rare occasions when the movie made from the novel is almost as good as the book. Set in the early 1960s, it revolves around efforts to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle. For nearly 130 years, the Frenc......more

The day of the jackal was over, and I was glad of that. Just because this old thriller was related to a favored genre of mine - the historical fiction - didn't mean I would like outdated thrillers with no idea that hasn't been milked by movies of various characteristics. But I learned one thing aft......more
