Synopsis

Living a successful life in Charleston, South Carolina, Kate MacKenna has always been able to turn her challenges into triumphs. But now the fates seem to be lining up against her . . . in a lethal fashion. While attending a reception at a friend’s estate for a controversial artist, Kate is nearly killed by an explosion. Once home, Kate is hit with the news that the prosperous fragrance company she has nurtured from the ground up is in jeopardy: It turns out that her late mother used the business as collateral for a huge loan, and full payment is due in three weeks. Kate’s still reeling from this devastating news when her younger sister’s volatile ex-boyfriend shows up and threatens her. Then Kate receives a call from her best friend, Jordan Buchanan, who is hospitalized and scheduled for surgery in Boston. Though stretched to the limit, Kate immediately rushes to her side. Once she knows that Jordan is going to be fine, Kate abandons her calm façade and allows herself a major meltdown, doing something that is totally uncharacteristic: She has a one-night stand with Jordan’s brother Dylan. Coming to her senses, Kate returns home determined to get back on track and save her business. But the mishaps keep coming. At Jordan’s insistence, Dylan checks up on Kate. He’s convinced that she’s merely having a spell of bad luck - until he discovers how many people want Kate MacKenna dead.

About Julie Garwood

I do not remember learning that an author had not learned how to read herself until the age of 11. But that was the case with author, Julie Garwood. She missed so much school with having a tonsillectomy at age six, the nobody realized that she did not complete her education in reading, and was not discovered until age 11. Amazing that the same child would grow up as Julie Garwood, a very successful American author. Her Irish heritage was an important force in her growing, as well as adult years. She also contributes her success to being the sixth of seven children. She says that relatively early she discovered that to be noticed in such a large family, her self-expression had to be "forceful, imaginative, and quick"!!!

Garwood's loyal readers seem to enjoy her poignant sense of humor, just as well as her ability to steer her readers toward crying and falling in love. Her mission with each book is to transport her readers to another world, after which they will feel like they have been in a great adventure.

Through local writer's conferences, Garwood met her future agent, even though she had never intended to become a professional writer. She lives in Leawood Kansas, and is currently writing tell notes for her next novel.

3 stars My first Julie Garwood book and I quite enjoyed it. I think personally I would have liked more sexy time, the person behind the bombings was no big surprise and some bits were a bit of a drag. Otherwise I'm interested enough to try the another Julie Garwood book. I think the hot cops are enoug......more

Over the past year, Kate McKenna and her sisters have had a hard time dealing with their mother's death. Kate was hoping that things would start getting better when she learns that the business she built from the ground up may be taken away from her. On top of that, Kate is nearly killed in an explo......more

Decided to give Julie Garwood a go since she'd been recommended to me, but apparently I picked the wrong book or something, because Slow Burn mostly just came across to me as Slow Bore. The blurb was promising, telling me all about how Kate MacKenna was being hounded by things blowing up everywhere......more

I read this like 3 years ago and liked it, but I'm DNFing it this time. These girls are so freaking ridiculous, it's painful. I am LITERALLY cringing as I read this stupid shit. The main character, Kate, is foolish and immature. Head in the sand, the family martyr, determined to be alone forever, bl......more
