Synopsis

“No one is Leonard’s equal,” declares the Chicago Tribune—and anyone who might doubt it would only have to read Elmore Leonard’s riveting noir classic, Unknown Man #89, to become a true believer. The twisty tale of a Detroit process server whose search for a missing stockholder leads him into more serious peril than he ever imagined possible, Unknown Man #89 is a gourmet stew of mystery, suspense, and double and triple cross, peppered with the razor sharp dialogue for which Grand Master Leonard is justifiably famous.Exhilarating old-school crime fiction that the late, great John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Robert Parker would have been proud to call their own, Unknown Man #89 is a gem—nothing less than we’d expect from the man who created the incomparable U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of the hit TV series Justified.

About Elmore Leonard

(This is a blog post I did that covers the two Leonard books featuring Jack Ryan.) Unknown Man #89 is told in a dark and gloomy tone. The plot is saturated with the realities of alcoholism. The criminals are patient and brooding and their acts are slow and deliberate. The main character, Jack Ryan, is a person that exudes his disenchantment with life. Even the weather, with its we......more

Unknown Man 89 is the 39th book I've read by Elmore Leonard, 40th if you count the bound version of his 10 Rules of Writing. George Pelecanos put Unknown Man in his top 5 Leonard novels in a list I found online. Not sure if it would be that high for me but it is excellent. It's not quite the straight......more

I like Leonard but this just never clicked with me. There was too much dialogue, not a lot of it was interesting, and a plot that was way too predictable.......more
