Synopsis

The year is 1964 when, faced with a hardhitting presidential campaign and a deteriorating situation in Vietnam, Lyndon Johnson dispatches Blackford Oakes and a swashbuckling soldier of fortune named Tucker on secret missions to Southeast Asia. Tucker is to figure out how to interdict military traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Oakes is to supervise a secret operation that will give Johnson the excuse he needs for a greater U.S. military role in Vietnam.

About William F. Buckley, Jr.

William F. Buckley, Jr. (1925-2008) was a public intellectual, conservative author, and political commentator. He founded National Review magazine, which had a major impact on the modern conservative movement in the United States, and wrote the popular newspaper column On the Right. Buckley also hosted almost 1,500 episodes of Firing Line and wrote more than 50 books on a variety of topics, including both nonfiction and a series of espionage thrillers.

At the time I read these novels (the late 1980's and early 1990's), I found them to be pretty good... sort of a cross between Matt Helm and James Bond. Not quite up to Ian Fleming's standards, but not quite as dated by then either.......more

Blackford Oakes gets to Vietnam as he makes his way through all of the Cold War hot spots as this series continues. A decent addition to the series, it will appeal much more to someone who is reading the series as opposed to someone starting with this book.......more
