Synopsis

Knives Out meets Everything Everywhere All at Once in this psychological thriller with a reality-bending twist: every suspect is an alternate version of the same man.

“A hilarious, heartbreaking, and highly entertaining escapade . . . Starting from an ingenious premise, the novel effortlessly carries us to an inevitable (and spectacular) reckoning.”—Daniel H. Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of Robopocalypse and Hole in the Sky

Joshua Hoffman is hosting a fortieth birthday party at his secluded lakeside home, but the guests are no ordinary attendees—they are nine alternate versions of himself from other timelines, all brought together by cutting-edge technology. Each has taken a different path through life. Each has ended up with a very different fate.

Among them are: The Argentinian, who fled his dreary hometown for a life of luxury in South America; The Townie, who stayed behind to marry his high school crush; The Marksman, a single father struggling to raise his troubled daughter; The Director, a Hollywood filmmaker facing an embarrassing end to his career; and The Teacher, a man of faith and moral duty.

But after a raucous night of one-upmanship, one of the Joshua Hoffmans is found brutally strangled. Now, the others must face a terrifying reality: a killer is among them—and his name is Joshua Hoffman.

As the violence escalates and bodies pile up, the group must uncover the murderer by answering a simple, chilling question: which Joshua Hoffman wants to kill his other selves, and why?

Quotes

“A hilarious, heartbreaking, and highly entertaining escapade, visiting every should’ve, would’ve, and could’ve in the many lives of Joshua Hoffman. Starting from an ingenious premise, the novel effortlessly carries us to an inevitable (and spectacular) reckoning.”—Daniel H. Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of Robopocalypse and Hole in the Sky

“Would you kill to become a better version of yourself? This Will Be the End of Me is an irresistible thriller that will leave you questioning everything. Smart, fast-paced, and totally unique, I read it in three sittings.”—Alex Pavesi, author of Ink Ribbon Red

“An ingenious high-concept page-turner of a thriller that over-delivers on every one of its promises, then drops a final twist that will haunt you for life. So good it made me want to murder the author.”—Paul Bradley Carr, author of The Confessions

“Jared Young’s This Will Be the End of Me is a propulsively plotted, surprisingly philosophical, and bloody fun take on identity, self-deception, and the roads not taken. This thriller will draw you in with its ingenious premise but keep you glued to the page with its sharp characterization and rollercoaster storytelling.”—Kevin Chong, author of The Double Life of Benson Yu

“A wildly inventive novel and a poignant, chilling meditation on the many selves in one person—those that we like, love, and loathe and those that, if given the chance, we might even kill.”—Kevin Hardcastle, author of County Road Six

“In This Will Be the End of Me, Jared Young has done the nearly-impossible. This novel is stylistically innovative, seriously thrilling, superbly written, and refreshingly unique in its imaginaries. Young blends the too-real realism of contemporary life with the uncanny near-future to ask some of the toughest questions we all fear to answer: ‘Who am I?’ and, even worse, ‘Am I the person I think I am?’ Young has written a novel that is a mystery, a sci-fi thriller, a philosophical inquiry, and a social critique. Deeply considered, humorous, tragic, and remarkably genuine, This Will Be the End of Me is a magic trick of storytelling.”—Zak Jones, author of Fancy Gap
