Synopsis

This is Annie Ernaux’s account of her passionate love affair with A., a man some thirty years younger, when she was in her fifties. The relationship pulls her back to memories of her own youth and, at the same time, leaves her feeling ageless, outside of time—together with a sense that she is living her life backwards. Amidst talk of having a child together, she feels time running its course and menopause approaching. The Young Man recalls Ernaux as the “scandalous girl” she once was but is composed with the mastery and the self-assurance she has achieved across decades of writing.

Just like the four books that I read previously of Annie Ernaux, reading her The young man left me conflicted, coaxing me into ruminating more than I had suspected on the moment I closed the booklet, a flimsy forty pages one can read in the twinkling of an eye. This account was partly written in 198......more

I love that so much of Annie Ernaux’s work is like A.E.: Would you like to hear about a scandelous affair I had? Me: ABSOLUTELY And then I perch eagerly at her feet and we drink the exquisite wine that is her prose and get all the juicy details that often come as an outpouring of emotional intensity li......more

The Young Man by Annie Ernaux is a Unique Non-Fiction Listening Experience! I feel like I've just walked through Annie Ernaux's head... Random thoughts. Pieces and parts. It feels like miscellaneous notes jotted down on napkins and slips of paper, shoved into pockets and purses, retrieved much la......more
