Synopsis

This novel dramatizes an incident that took place in a California school in 1969. A teacher creates an experimental movement in his class to help students understand how people could have followed Hitler. The results are astounding. The highly disciplined group, modeled on the principles of the Hitler Youth, has its own salute, chants, and special ways of acting as a unit and sweeps beyond the class and throughout the school, evolving into a society willing to give up freedom for regimentation and blind obedience to their leader. All will learn a lesson that will never be forgotten.

About Todd Strasser

Todd Strasser is the internationally bestselling author of numerous books for children and teens, most notably the classics The Wave and Give a Boy a Gun, which are taught in classrooms around the world. While many of his novels are based on or inspired by events in his own life, Fallout — his 100th original novel — is an especially personal story. “We were indeed the only ones in the neighborhood with a bomb shelter,” he says. “This novel can be read as a memoir, both of what happened during that time and of what I feared would happen.” Todd Strasser lives in New York.

2.5 stars. I picked this up cuz I found the premise interesting and that it was based on real events. The writing is really bad but this being a short book made me glad. The message intended was good but it failed in its execution with one dimensional characters. All in all, a unique short read.......more
