Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was a major twentieth-century author, a great novelist and essayist, and a key figure in literary history as a feminist and a modernist. How flimsy are the accroutrements of civilisation in the face of nature. It’s like it took Virginia a third of this novel to get out of her Victorian stays, chemises, petticoats and corsets. Once she shakes off all the Victorian trappings though she moves with beautiful poise and clarity of purpose.......more
