Synopsis

Twenty-year-old Jessie Warfield is branded a disgrace for riding as a jockey on her father's racehorses, wearing men's clothing, exposing her skin to the sun and, in general, not acting like a lady at all.James Wyndham, eligible widower and owner of a nearby horse farm, is Jessie's rival on the race track. Outwardly competitive to the extreme with James, she is secretly in love with him. James, having known her since she was fourteen, sees her only as a little sister and a bratty one at that.Together they are the unlikeliest romantic duo among their native Baltimore riding set. When Jessie sets out to protect James from a marriage entrapment, she ends up compromising her own reputation and is pressured into leaving town. She flees to an unlikely haven: the estate of James's British cousins, the Earl and "Duchess" of Chase. There she is pampered, dressed, and transformed into a lady. Smitten by the new Jessie, James proposes and they marry.Their new, shared passion results in hideous nightmares—nightmares that soon reveal themselves to be recovered memories of a long-ago attempted rape and murder. When connections are made between those events and the pirate Blackbeard's diaries, the hunt is on for his buried treasure.

About Catherine Coulter

If you could begin you full time job at 7:30 a.m. and be completed for the day by 11:00, wouldn't that be a great job? American author, Catherine Coulter has her dream job with just that schedule. She begins every morning at 6:30 a.m. checking and answering her emails, and begins writing at 7:30 a.m. After writing her quota for the day, she finishes at 11:00! Coulter usually plans to write one suspense novel and one historical romance novel each year.

Coulter began her career as a speech writer for an executive on Wall Street while her husband was a medical student. She did a lot of reading herself to fill her time as he studied or was on duty. During one particular reading episode, she got so aggravated by the lack of good writing in the book she was reading, that she threw it across the room. As she did this, she yelled, I could do so much better than that! Her husband said, then go ahead, prove it! Thus began a career that has led her to writing over fifty books, with 42 consecutive novels on the New York Times best seller list. Among them: The Cove, The Maze, The Target, The Edge, Riptide, Knockout, Hemlock Bay, Blindside, and many others in her suspense thriller series.

Coulter currently resides in Marin County, California just across the Golden Gate Bridge, with her husband and their three cats. They enjoy travel, skiing, and she is still a very avid reader.

Clearly written in the 1990s, so I usually consider that when dialogue becomes an issue. However, in this third installment of what has been a wonderful series, I really couldn’t tolerate about half of the book because of the misogynistic male lead. Misogyny colors the story line, the dialogue and e......more

My only problem with this book is it took James so long to tell Jessie that he loves her. I think his love for Jessie goes way back from the beginning where they were both competitors in the horse-racing business. This is the typical story where the girl likes the guy but the only way she knows how......more

This was not my kind of story, maybe i shouldn’t have read the legacy series back to back. There was a sameness to the stories, especially since the characters appear in each others books. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one but I’ll see how it holds up in re-read. The Valentine heroine was still a c......more

This book stood on its own so I didn’t know part of series. Liked the interaction between Jessie and James as teens. Totally understand Jessie and her love of horses and the issue of girls supposedly just on sidelines, not jockeys. Good humor of her learning about being sexy. Their time in England a......more

I didn’t realize that this was the third in a historical mystery dynasty series until I read the epilogue. Catherine Coulter writes wonderful dialogue and really develops her characters. Part of the American 18th century historical background seemed a bit didactic, but didn’t detract from the plot.......more
