Synopsis

Iris Harland came to Elder Cottage under steady rain, carrying little more than a soil-coloured scarf, a wary orange cat named Moss, and a private hope that ritual — kettle warmth, toast buttered just so — might help her belong somewhere again. Little Darlow had other ideas. A neighbour's returned envelope, a faded recipe tin left behind by Mrs Halloway, and a quiet gardener named Tom Avery, who mends her fence and then, without quite meaning to, her solitude — one by one the village lets itself in.
This chapter range settles into deep December snow: an undecorated tree waiting in the corner, a solstice dinner at Margaret's table, a lights competition dividing the village WhatsApp group, and Christmas itself arriving in three unhurried parts — the goose, the grace, the sherry, and a note tucked into a biscuit tin that says more than Mary Pritchard ever could aloud. Nothing bad happens in Little Darlow. Things are mended, shared, and eaten instead.
Eliza Hartley's seasonal village serial continues at its own easy, companionable pace — well suited to slow evening listening, when what you want is company rather than plot.
