Synopsis

"The story touches on many familiar fantasy plot points — magic, an ancient language, an ability to commune with wild creatures, a climactic battle between the forces of good and evil — yet manages to be satisfying. It’s aided by a capable reading from Barber, who invests Rollins’ characters with a variety of British accents that help make each a distinguishable, real person."- The Providence Journal

About James Rollins

Veterinary Medicine is a very time consuming, stressful profession, especially for the owner of the veterinary practice. Author, James Rollins (aka James Paul Czajkowski) began his adult career with a DVM degree from the University of Missouri in 1985. He was then working as many as 18 hours a day, while writing on his lunch time, or any spare minutes he might find. For ten years he operated his practice, employing as many as 24 staff personnel, continuing to write during spare moments. One day, he decided to reverse the job and hobby routine. He began writing full time and spent a day or so per week volunteering to do neuter surgeries at the local SPCA.

Rollins began his storytelling very early as a child, so it came naturally to him by the time he made it his main career. His writing gives the reader a look into unseen worlds, mostly underground or underwater. His books are full of originality, scientific breakthroughs, as well as historical insight. All of this packed into a fast paced story line that is honed using his basic knowledge of science and medicine. That skill sets James Rollin's books apart from the others. He is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that are translated into over forty languages. His "Sigma" series is his most popular.

While The Starless Crown unfolds through several viewpoints, it is really Nyx who is the......more

3.0 Stars I love when fantasy includes elements of science fiction so I was incredibly excited when this novel started with a discussion of orbital mechanics.  I have never read the author's backlist so I cannot personally comment on how this compares to his previous work. Given his background in thri......more

James Rollins' books all seem to have the same issue for me. Too much exposition, not a whole lot in the way of plot, and much much deus ex machina. I'm not even going to bother to review this one over on the blog because there's not a lot of positives that I can point out. A pretty disappointing re......more

Mediocre when not bad. Riddled with the tropes, stilted dialogue, and standard sexist characterizations that make so much modern fantasy a punchline to critics. Loved redundant descriptions like "bosky woods" and "craven coward." In a literary landscape pushed upwards by the likes of Jemisin and Kua......more
