Synopsis

In the quiet Amish community of Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania, time has stood still while cherished traditions and heartfelt beliefs have flourished. But a secret lies buried that could shatter the tranquility its inhabitants have grown to love. On the eve of her wedding, Katie Lapp hears startling news from her anguished parents. Nothing could have prepared her for the devastation their confession brings. Feeling betrayed, Katie watches as the only life she has ever known begins to unravel, leaving in its wake a furrow of pain but also a future of hope. The Shunning is the first book in a trilogy that recreates the simple life of the Amish. Its themes of hope and reconciliation show us that even when we think we are far away, Gods love is always present.

This story will break your heart, about a young amish girl who learns she is adopted. She realises after 22 years she is English and not truly Amish, and wonders who she really is? She goes in search of herself and the Amish community feels that she is sinning, and demands that she go on bended knee and confess her sins and repent. She refuses to do this, and is shunned by family and friends alike. The book goes much deeper and it is truly a wonderful book to either read or listen to. I highly recommend it for all ages.

I am an history buff, so always interested in special communities, and the Amish. So as an anthropological trip in Amish county, the book was fulfilling. The whole confession-shunning process is followed in this very severe Amish community. But as a novel, about authority and belonging, the character......more
