Synopsis

Victor Hugo's poetry moves effortlessly between grief and wonder, revolution and tenderness. This carefully selected collection gathers some of his most powerful and intimate works — from the haunting sorrow of Tomorrow at Dawn and After the Battle to the luminous beauty of Sunset and The Grave and the Rose. Rich with emotion, humanity, and unforgettable imagery, these poems reveal Hugo not only as one of France's greatest writers, but as a poet deeply attuned to love, loss, memory, and hope. Timeless and strikingly modern, these verses continue to speak across generations. Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was one of the towering literary figures of the nineteenth century. Best known for novels such as Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, he was also a master poet whose work explored justice, nature, love, faith, and the human spirit. His poetry remains celebrated for its emotional depth, lyrical beauty, and enduring relevance.

About Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo (1802–1885) was a French poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, human rights campaigner, and perhaps the most influential exponent of the Romantic movement in France.

In France, Hugo's literary reputation rests primarily on his poetic and dramatic output and only secondarily on his novels. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Legende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem, and Hugo is sometimes identified as the greatest French poet. In the English-speaking world, his best-known works are the novels Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His other novels include The Last Days of a Condemned Man, Toilers of the Sea, and The Man Who Laughs.
