Synopsis

Vigàta is bustling as the new filming location for a Swedish television series set in 1950. In the production frenzy, the director asks the locals to track down movies and vintage photos to faithfully recreate the air of Vigàta in that time. Engineer Ernesto Sabatello, while rummaging in the attic of his house, finds some films shot by his father from 1958 to 1963—always on the same day; March 27, and always the same shot: the outside wall of a country house.Montalbano hears the story and, intrigued by the mystery of it, begins to investigate its meaning. Meanwhile, a middle school is threatened by a group of armed men—but a closer look at the situation finds Montalbano looking into the students themselves and finally delving into the world of social media.

The Safety Net by Andrea Camilleri The main plot in this book featuring Inspector Montalbano is not even a crime. A man asks Montalbano to help him solve a personal mystery. The man’s father was a film buff in the early days of hand-held cameras. After his father died, the man went through all the fa......more

Two interesting mysteries, as usual, in this volume, #25, that I enjoyed quite a bit. The first story is again about the infiltration of "world" terrorism into small town Vigata--two masked men in Guy Fawkes masks and guns break into an elementary school classroom and, while no child is hurt, they f......more

I am absolutely in love with the Montalbano series. I have devoured all of the books that have been translated into English so far, and love snuggling up to watch the TV adaptation. Vigata is in turmoil because of film is being shot on location, most importantly interfering with daily lunch meals. To get a feeling for the place, the director has asked for old films, producing weird ones of a blank wall, all shot on the same day of the year, where a suicide too place in the late......more

Quotes

"The Safety Net, Camilleri’s twenty-sixth Inspector Montalbano mystery novel, proves to be every bit as droll, as delicious, and as darkly tough as the first twenty-five.” Washington Post

“Technologies of the past and present pose challenges for Inspector Montalbano in The Safety Net…Montalbano becomes intrigued by the discovery of films—shot on the same day each year, at the same location—and what the motivation was behind the films.” Amazon.com

“Offers a rich, nuanced mix of plot elements…As the cases conclude, with none of the resolutions showing up on official records, readers will feel a pang of loss that this may be one of the last visits they’ll have from an old, wise friend.” Publishers Weekly

“Revered Italian author Camilleri created an enduring, award-winning series that is internationally recognized. This twenty-fifth book is absorbing, cerebral, and infused with humor as well as tantalizing descriptions of Sicilian cuisine.” Library Journal

“Much ado about nothing? Yes, maybe, but with the charismatic inspector, nothing is always more than it seems.” Booklist

“Both darker and more absurd than previous romps, the latest Montalbano is a bracing cautionary tale. Kirkus Reviews
