Synopsis

The Keep—that beautiful, ancient family home where the Chadwick family has lived for generations—is still a haven from the heartbreaks and storms of life. Jolyon Chadwick, a famous television presenter, takes his new girlfriend, Henrietta, home to meet his extended family—and also to meet Marie, the mother who deserted him and his father many years ago, and who has now reappeared and seems to want forgiveness. Jolyon, however, is not in the mood for forgiveness—although his father, Hal, now married to his cousin and childhood sweetheart, feels a lingering guilt about Marie and wants them all to be friends. And Henrietta, still vulnerable from the breakup of her own parents' marriage, is not sure whether she can move on.

About Marcia Willett

Marcia Willett’s early life was devoted to the ballet, but her dreams of becoming a ballerina ended when she grew out of the classical proportions then required. She had always loved books, and a family crisis made her take up a new career as a novelist—a decision she has never regretted. She lives in a beautiful, wild part of Devon with her husband, where she loves to be visited by her son and his young family.

About June Barrie

June Barrie has appeared in over eighty productions at the Bristol Old Vic, including playing Marina in Uncle Vanya, Mrs. Alving in Ghosts, Mrs. Conway in J. B. Priestley’s Time and the Conways, and the title roles in Driving Miss Daisy and Stevie. She has extensive experience on radio in plays and serials, while her television credits include Close Relations, Coasting, Seduction, and the BAFTA-nominated Dual Balls.

Kõige vähem haarava, kuid siiski mõnus lugemine.......more

This is a later add-on to the Chadwick family chronicles that I read over the winter, and carries the same gentle warmth as the previous books. A light, easy read, with redemption of some sort in the end for even the most difficult characters. The tense relationship between Henrietta and her mother......more

I may have enjoyed this book more than the others before it. The story was rich with interest points and plot thickening dilemmas, but I still have a few criticisms. I’ll start with the praise. As sceptical as I was, the character arc of Maria actually flowed really well, even with the emotional resp......more

Goodreads review by Tracy on June 13, 2018

Typical Willet style in lots of descriptive scenery and many characters who are so intricately involved in how they know each other it's quite tricky to keep it straight or even totally "get it" in the first place. I find that it didn't even matter really at the end of day how a few of them actually......more

Quotes

“[A] gentle, charming novel of indiscretion, grudges, love, and mortality…The plot clicks along with pleasant, cathartic rhythms and an intriguing mystery subplot.” Publishers Weekly

“The institutions of marriage and family come under particularly keen scrutiny in Willett’s reliably tender hands.” Booklist
