I've read some books about the origins of everything and this one was my least favorite. He focused on some aspects, and left others out, for example, he spoke lots about plate tectonics, but not so much about complex life.......more

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It has everything: -the creation of the universe, its stars, black holes, and galaxies -the creation and inner workings of our volcanic planet -the birth of the first cells (vents and RNA world) -how convection runs *everything* (he love convection and s......more

This was a really good overview of the formation of our universe to our evolution. It explains a lot of common concepts in a very readable, understandable format. Great as an introduction to them all & probably understandable even by preteens & fundamentalists. Very well narrated & highly recommende......more

Still, it's good to have a fairly elementary grasp of the formation of local, stellar, and interstellar struc......more

Quotes

“Explaining life, the universe, and everything in 100 pages may be a tall order, but physicist and volcano enthusiast Bercovici rises to the challenge…Origins delivers on its promise—and (bonus!) it’s even fun to read.” Discover magazine

“For determined minds hoping for cogent, clever explanations for what we know of the history of the universe, Bercovici nails it.” Shelf Awareness

“Narrator Jim Meskiman turns the material into an energetic science lecture, which is appropriate since a Yale course inspired the book. Meskiman’s clear, nuanced delivery and Bercovici’s writing elucidate in a fresh way. Listeners may find themselves pondering ideas such as their own births as atoms in giant stars.” AudioFile

“We are stardust. David Bercovici’s ‘pocket guide’ to the universe unpacks that beautiful truth.” Sean B. Carroll, author of The Serengeti Rules

“Written with verve and a sense of humor.” Doug Macdougall, author of Frozen Earth
