Synopsis

My life is split into two parts. Before my best friend Danni died, and after. For years that night at the party has played on repeat in my mind. Danni was tipsy and heartbroken after being dumped suddenly by Nathan. I took her to lie down, encouraged her to sleep it off, told her to stop making a scene. Only hours later, Danni was found outside beneath the bedroom window, dead. Danni’s parents see me as a second daughter. They even have my picture hanging on their wall. But they don’t know everything about the night their daughter died. They don’t know what I can’t bring myself to tell them, and the truth is eating me alive. Will they still see me as a second daughter when they find out? And why do I feel like they’re hiding something, too? Fans of The Housemaid, The Girl on the Train and books by Susan Lewis will be completely gripped by this unputdownable and suspenseful emotional family drama with plenty of twists and turns. About Deirdre Palmer

"Deirdre Palmer lives in Brighton, on the south coast of England, with her husband and their cat, Chester. She’s the author of fifteen books, published and self-published, under her own name and as Zara Thorne. These are a mix of women's fiction, romcom and psychological suspense. While she was writing her first book, she entered the Mail on Sunday novel competition and came fourth, then entered again two years later and came fourth again! It was a while ago now, but the winners' lunch with Fay Weldon and other famous writers was a totally unforgettable experience and definitely inspired her to keep on writing. When she’s not writing, she loves to read, obviously, and enjoys drawing and painting, visiting National Trust properties and the Sussex countryside, where she often sets her books, and meeting up with friends for coffee and chat, her favourite pastime! Nice introduction to Inspector Thanet in this first of the series. See review by Colin as I second his thoughts on this book. It does bring back another era and introduced me to Sturrenden, Kent, England. Kindle Unlimited......more

A nice solid book involving a murder investigation in current (1980's) and in the past. I really liked Inspector Thanet, he has the dogged investigative skills of Poirot but with a lot more humanity. A good whodunit that has left me wanting to read more of Simpson's work.......more
