Synopsis

“Leonard is tops in his field.”
—New Orleans Times-PicayuneThe great Elmore Leonard, “America’s pre-eminent crime fiction writer” (Chicago Tribune), takes readers back to Prohibition days in the back hills of Kentucky in a rollicking story of guns, greed, and illegally brewed corn liquor. The Moonshine War is a tale of the chaos that ensues when a gang of city slickers sets out to steal thousands of dollars-worth of homemade whiskey from a hell-raising country boy—who is anything but the easy mark they were expecting. A rediscovered Elmore Leonard classic, The Moonshine War is a wild ride bursting with the author’s hallmark delights: the twisty plot, the gripping suspense, the wit and, of course, the razor-sharp dialogue. It’s no wonder that the creator of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens—lately the star of the hit TV series Justified—is always listed among the mystery and crime fiction elite, including John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Robert Parker, and often at the very top of the list.

About Elmore Leonard

Elmore Leonard wrote more than forty books during his long career, including the bestsellers Raylan, Tishomingo Blues, Be Cool, Get Shorty, and Rum Punch, as well as the acclaimed collection When the Women Come Out to Dance, which was a New York Times Notable Book. Many of his books have been made into movies, including Get Shorty and Out of Sight. The short story “Fire in the Hole,” and three books, including Raylan, were the basis for the FX hit show Justified. Leonard received the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN USA and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. He died in 2013.

Sometimes you read a book to learn something you didn’t know anything about. Sometimes it’s to transport yourself to another place and time. Sometimes the beauty of the prose makes you shake your head with wonder. I get that. If you are lucky, your choice may give you insights into your own life or......more

One of Leonard's lesser known novels, The Moonshine War is, nevertheless, Grade-A Leonard, well worth seeking out. Written in 1969, one could say it was written at a time when Leonard was still a wonderful secret, and not yet a trendy discovery for People Magazine. What makes The Moonshine War a bit......more

If this book is anything, it is certainly entertaining, and reading for the pure enjoyment of a story is something that every reader should do from time-to-time. While I seem to be obsessed with searching out that next morsel of wisdom or insight from my next book, I also need to remember that I wou......more
