Synopsis

Being a paramedic is a tough job; it’s tougher when you stumble onto a crashed alien spacecraft.

Melanie Mooney thought she was just doing her job when she came upon an unusual accident in the deep woods late one night. Acting alone, what she found was nothing like she’d expected. What followed was even more unexpected.

Recruited by emissaries of a galaxy-spanning civilization, Melanie is thrust into a world she thought only existed in supermarket tabloids. As the first human in the Galactic Union Medical Corps, she cares for extraterrestrials in desperate need of a medic who can ignore the fact that they’re nothing like any patient she’s ever seen, even on their best days. And in emergency medicine, it’s a given that every patient is having the worst day of their life.

Each run takes her deeper into the galaxy and farther from home, navigating alien cultures that only get weirder with each call. It will take all of Melanie’s experience, instinct, and grit to prove herself—and the rest of humanity—to be worthy of the Union. That’s a lot to put on a woman who’d just like to end the day with a cheeseburger and a cold beer.

About Patrick Chiles

Patrick Chiles has been fascinated by aircraft, rockets, and spaceflight ever since he was a child transfixed by the Apollo missions. How he ended up as an English major in college is still a mystery, though he managed to overcome this to pursue a career in aviation operations and safety management. He is a graduate of The Citadel, a Marine Corps veteran, and a private pilot. In addition to his novels, he has written for magazines including Smithsonian's Air & Space. He currently resides in Tennessee with his wife and two lethargic dachshunds.

This definitely wasn't the book I was expecting. I feel like it had the potential to be a really good book, but it just had a lot of issues. The biggest one is that it was confusing in parts. There were several places where I had to go back and reread parts to see if I'd missed something. Most of th......more

Good book, although I found it a little confusing at times. I think a little more detail would have helped. I am a trail runner, and I enjoyed the trail running in the book. I didn't care for Sara, but maybe I would have if more detail in their relationship was given. It took me a while to read it a......more

This book grabbed my attention from the start! This was my first read from this author, but the book description sounded very interesting. I am so glad to have given it a try. I loved the characters, especially Sara, who is bad-ass, sassy, and too curious for her own good. The twists, turns, and sus......more

Needs a little tightening… Leave out the politics next time, is my humble suggestion. Stereotypes of “Deplorables” do nothing to advance the plot or character development. I liked the action sequences!......more
