Synopsis

A monster hunter who secretly runs a sanctuary for the very creatures she pursues must form an unlikely alliance with a sorcerer in this profound and moving novel from the USA Today bestselling author of The Keeper of Magical Things.

When villagers in the Crownless Kingdom find themselves beset by winged or wicked creatures, they call on Meixin the monster hunter and her trusty hound to rid them of the beasts for a bit of coin. What they don’t know is this: Meixin rescues more monsters than she kills—most of them are just misunderstood—and brings them home to a hidden island sanctuary where they can live in peace. And where Meixin too can hide away from prying eyes, and keep her biggest secret: the one that explains why she understands what it is to be called a monster all too well.

Faran the Green is an upstart sorcerer with something to prove. When a magical reward is offered to anyone who can find the rumored last dragon in the kingdom, he decides his best chance at winning it means seeking out the services of a reclusive, yet renowned monster hunter: Meixin.

At first, Meixin wants to refuse the charmingly earnest sorcerer, until she realizes that she can use Faran to find the dragon for her own purposes. As their partnership deepens into something more, she wonders if she has finally found someone who might accept her for who—and what—she really is. But when their hunt threatens to expose her sanctuary and her secrets, she must choose a side—man or monster—in this captivating, poignant, and tenderly hopeful fantasy about finding acceptance and belonging in a world built to keep people apart.

About The Author

Julie Leong is a Chinese Malaysian American fantasy author who grew up across suburban New Jersey and Beijing, China, and managed to feel equally out of place in both. She studied economics and political science at Yale University and was very briefly an investment banker before coming to her senses. She now lives in San Francisco with her needy dog, her less needy husband, and one thoroughly self-sufficient Meyer lemon tree. When she’s not writing, she enjoys making unnecessary spreadsheets and flambéing things.

Quotes

"Transportive, tender, and completely enchanting, The Isle of Lonely Monsters stole my heart! Leong crafts a richly imagined world filled with strange and wonderful creatures, and a monster hunter heroine you can’t help but root for. A deeply human story about belonging, found family, and the courage it takes to let yourself be truly known, and loved." - K. X. Song, New York Times bestselling author of The Night Ends with Fire

"The Isle of Lonely Monsters is one of the loveliest books I've read, an absolute treasure of storytelling that is going to linger in my heart always. Julie Leong has woven real magic using gorgeous language, deeply interesting characters, and a world that feels as spellbinding as moonlight. I truly can't recommend this highly enough! It deserves all praise." - USA Today bestselling author India Holton

"Every once in a while you come across a book that makes you feel somehow more human than you did before you read it. Full of characters (and critters) you'll adore, The Isle of Lonely Monsters gently and unflinchingly asks us to examine what makes a monster, and what it means to be seen for who you truly are. As devastating as it is tender, and as heart-pounding as it is heartwarming, Julie Leong has crafted the truest kind of magic here. This book wrecked me in the best way, and I loved every moment of it." - Emily Krempholtz, USA Today bestselling author of Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore
“Filled with lush prose and wounded, endearing misfits, The Isle of Lonely Monsters is an exploration of trust, love, and what truly makes someone monstrous. Leong’s world is full of tantalizing creatures that pair beautifully with her stoic but kind-hearted heroine. This book is like a hot cup of tea on a bitter cold morning; comforting, uplifting, and more than a bit magical.” - Moorea Corrigan, USA Today bestselling author of Thistlemarsh

"Julie Leong's most perilous book yet, a taut adventure that dares to care for the dragons that others hunt, while maintaining the warm heart that made Leong's earlier books unforgettable. It feels like a lantern has finally been carried into a dark and lonely corner. If you pumped your fists in Sapkowski's Witcher or Kaner's Godkiller when a hero bonded with uncanny critters and fought to help them? Then this book is for you. And we should be friends." - John Wiswell, Nebula Award-winning author of The Dragon Has Some Complaints

"Vivid, heartwarming, and rife with adventure, The Isle of Lonely Monsters is an absolutely riveting read. I was swept up in Meixin and Faran's quest to find the last living dragon as they confronted their growing bond, painful family ties, and the shared loneliness of humans and monsters. Every monster on the isle has a place in my heart." - Sara Hashem, USA Today and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Jasad Heir

"Contemplative and captivating… a gem of a cosy fantasy about a reserved monster-hunter, her found family of monsters, and the gentle sorcerer who has to seek her help. With its richly imagined world steeped in folklore, its tender romance, and its themes of belonging, this book has my whole heart." – Geneveva Dimova, Author of Foul Days

"Bursting with heart and its wild, folkloric roots, The Isle of Lonely Monsters is a story of sacrifice, bravery, and found family in a magical, morally grey world. Julie Leong’s characters are exquisitely drawn, and you can’t help but fall for them as they yearn for all that was lost and strive for that which might yet be found." – Susan J. Morris, author of Strange Beasts

"Julie Leong absolutely soars in this high fantasy gem. Lush, enchanting, and monstrously beautiful, The Isle of Lonely Monsters rings of The Witcher's quests and the splendor of Howl's Moving Castle. This novel has exquisite emotional depth, humor, tenderness, and characters you'll wish you could share a campfire with. Leong crafts a masterfully rich tale, balancing heart-wrenching stakes with kindness, hope, and of course, monsters you'll want to take home. All in all, radiant."– Lexie Sharabianlou, author of The Blue Moon Café & 24-Hour Occult Emporium
