About J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892.1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.

I never read Tolkien when I was younger, and until the movies, had really no interest. I love the trilogy movies and after watching them, I wanted to read the book. I decided to get the Hobbit first because it had some background, and I knew they were making the movie. I discovered what I missed! After listening to all four books, this is, by far, the best of the bunch. The story is a lot more engaging, much more concise, and the writing was the best. I recommend listening to this book first, before the trilogy, and before the movie comes out. It will be your favorite after it is all over. It was mine.

There are some days when I actually think that the humble Hobbit is superior to it's bohemoth brother, The Lord of the Rings. It's a much tighter story, and Bilbo is a much more appeal character than is Frodo. I also just love this poem, from The Hobbit Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeon......more
