Synopsis

Like many young idealists, Eric Greitens wanted to make a difference. During college and afterward, he traveled to the world's trouble spots, working in refugee camps, serving the sick and the poor on four continents, from Gaza to Croatia to Mother Teresa's home in Calcutta, among others. Yet he could not prevent violence or save anyone from becoming a refugee; he could only step in afterward and try to ease the damage.

So Eric joined the Navy SEALs and became an elite warrior. In a moving and inspiring memoir, told with genuine humility, Eric offers something new in the history of military memoirs: a warrior who wanted to be strong to be good, only to discover that he had to be good to be strong. Throughout his SEAL training and deployments in Kenya, Thailand, Afghanistan, and Iraq, the lessons of his humanitarian work bore fruit. The result is a lesson for us all: the heart and fist together are more powerful than either one alone.

About Eric Greitens

Eric Greitens was born and raised in Missouri. He attended Duke University as an A.B. Duke Scholar and was awarded a Truman and a Rhodes scholarship to attend Oxford University, where he won a gold medal at the BUSA National Boxing Championships and earned a Ph.D. His research led to humanitarian work around the world, including in Rwanda, Albania, Mexico, India, Croatia, Bolivia, and Cambodia. In 2001, Eric joined the Navy SEALs and deployed four times during the global war on terror. His military awards include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. When Eric returned from Iraq, he founded The Mission Continues, America's leading organization for helping wounded and disabled warriors to serve their country again as citizen leaders here at home.

I have little understanding of the glories of war, and I admit to not understanding those who choose to join the military. Furthermore, warriors are rarely among the people I admire most. So when I heard about this book, I hoped I’d get some insight into what draws people to those choices. Eric Grei......more

4 1/2 Stars The Heart and the Fist:By Eric Greitens is a wonderful book about a real American hero. Part one of the book shows his change of heart as he served the poor. Secondly we read about his formation into a Navy Seal. He portrayed the candidates to be Seals as just regular guys being pushed to......more

Eric Greitens, I pray the narrative of your life shadows and inspires mine until my final day. Readers, harvest the wisdom of this book. Feast on it. Eric Greitens transcends the jingoism and railing identity politics that tend to invade our national discourse. Instead, he proves that an unimpeachab......more

I read Eric Greitens book, The Heart and The Fist. He is cooler than anyone you know. He has lived a better life than most people you know. Worse for me, my path now seems like a poor imitation of his- he got his PhD from Oxford, on a Rhodes Scholarship after years of going to terrible places and do......more
