Synopsis

Kit Hayes thought she’d have life figured out by now.Instead, the almost-thirty former startup marketing director is broke, unemployed, living behind her parents’ Brentwood home, and quietly panicking about the future. Tired of financial instability and modern dating disappointments, Kit develops a bold new plan: Stop searching for the perfect job and start searching for the perfect husband. Her target is Mason Sinclair—wealthy, handsome, socially connected, and very aware of his own appeal. With the reluctant help of longtime best friend Sam Ryan, Kit orchestrates a “chance” meeting designed to spark romance. To her surprise, the strategy works almost immediately. As the whirlwind courtship turns increasingly serious, Kit finds herself pulled between the glamorous future she always imagined and the quieter emotional truths she’s spent years avoiding. What begins as a playful exercise in romantic calculation becomes a deeper reckoning about love, friendship, and the difference between financial security and happiness.Funny, emotionally sharp, and painfully modern, “The Guy Friend” transforms Mary Roberts Rinehart’s 1920 rom-com blueprint “The Family Friend” into a contemporary love story about dating, money anxiety, and the precarious illusion that we can outsmart our own hearts.

About Mary Roberts Rinehart

Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958) was a novelist and playwright best known for her mystery stories, which combined humor with ingenuity. The success of her novels The Circular Staircase and The Man in Lower Ten established her reputation as an important American mystery writer. At one time she was the highest paid writer in America. In addition to mysteries, she wrote comic tales, plays, romances, and travel books, some of which reflected her experiences as a correspondent during World War I. One critic called her autobiography, My Story, her finest book.
