Synopsis

Without an understanding and appreciation of the culture we seek to preserve and protect, the defense of Western civilization is fundamentally futile; a culture that believes in nothing cannot defend itself, because it has nothing to defend. The past not only still has something to tell us, but it also has something that it must tell us.

In this profound and wide-ranging historical survey, Michael Walsh illuminates the ways that the narrative and visual arts both reflect and affect the course of political history, outlining the way forward by arguing for the restoration of the Heroic Narrative that forms the basis of all Western cultural and religious traditions. Let us listen, then, to the angels of our nature, for better and worse. They have much to tell us, if only we will listen.

An impossibly unique book I am not a Christian, though I am well-read in Christian literature (of the Augustine, Dante, Aquinas variety.) Nor am I an atheist. I am a creature of Western literature, art, and music from the ancient Greeks to the present, and I must say Michael Walsh has created a tour......more

Excellent read. Tremendous knowledge of classical culture, art, music, and history in the search for the heroic endeavor. Descriptive of how culture and art have influenced history and politics, for example, how Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" figured into the French Revolution within 10 years. So......more

On the scattershot side. Occasionally pompous. Often repetitive. Not deeply thought out. Still, on occasion, an interesting read. Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.......more

The Fiery Angel is a follow-on from The Devil's Pleasure Palace, and it feels strange to give it such a positive review after panning the first book. As with the first book, the thesis of The Fiery Angel is that we cannot understand the nature and inherent value of Western Civilisation without under......more

Engagingly written. Uneven (and sometimes deeply flawed) notions. Xenophobic to the core. This is my the first ever book I’ve read from Michael Walsh, so I was not sure what to expect. It's clear that the author is skilled and capable of discussing the history and progression of music, history and a......more
