Synopsis

In the midst of the Industrial Revolution, an extraordinary group of scientists struggled to make sense of a mysterious, prehistoric worlda world that they had to piece together from the fossilized, fragmentary remains of animals no one had ever seen. These nineteenthcentury pioneers were an eccentric lot that included a workingclass woman, an Oxford professor with a theatrical bent, a crisisridden country doctor who was never quite accepted among Londons scientific elite, and an expert anatomist who once dissected a rhino in his living room. These were the Dragon Seekers, the people who brought the myths to life and whose work, within a populace raised on a literal interpretation of Genesis, laid the groundwork for the revolutionary ideas of Darwin.

I picked up this book with the intent to gain a more historically accurate look at the life of Mary Anning (having just read a fictionalized account of her life in Remarkable Creatures). Although at times academic and somewhat technical, it was engaging, flowed well, and was highly readable. I found......more

Ancient bones and magnets were both known to antiquity, but not until the 19th century did their importance begin to be realized.
