Synopsis

Helena and the oracular bookstore Abernathy’s stopped an attack by the alien invaders’ human allies and destroyed their attempt at a second oracle, giving the Wardens much-needed victories. Now, after months of fighting a defensive war, the Wardens plan a direct assault on the enemy stronghold. But as the battle approaches, Abernathy’s has other plans. The oracle directs Helena to contact four ordinary people with extraordinary talents whose abilities will change the course of the war. Convincing them to join the fight challenges Helena’s persuasive powers to the extreme. If she fails, it will mean the deaths of thousands—including those Helena loves most.

About Melissa McShane

Melissa McShane is the author of Emissary, The Smoke-Scented Girl, and the novels of Tremontane: Servant of the Crown, Rider of the Crown, and Agent of the Crown. Her love of reading has been a constant in her life and she still remembers the places she lived by the books she was reading there: the Riddle-Master trilogy in New York, the Foundation series in Colorado, Howl's Moving Castle in Texas, Crown Duel in Utah. That love of reading stayed with her after she settled with her family in Utah and grew into a love of writing, first critical essays and reviews, then fiction. Her family includes her husband (a long-suffering man willing to let ideas bounce off him at speed), four children (also long-suffering and happy to live off macaroni and cheese while Mom writes) and three very needy cats, one of whom is so dumb he frequently runs into walls.

This is eighth in a Contemporary Fantasy series and characters and plot carry over from the start. So I definitely recommend reading them in order. My usual, but non-standard, disclaimer applies here. I do my best to be honest, but part of that is admitting how much I adore Melissa, even after living......more

Not the last book in the series (there's one more), but it's the last one for me . I got a bit bored while reading this book; if the first one in the series was finished in 2 days, this one I barely managed to finish in 1 week. Plus, it's pretty predictable. I mean, I know what will happen next, jus......more

I'm sad to say that this book felt a bit meh for me. I still love the series and I will finish it, but I took some time between last book and this one and maybe that is one of the reasons I did not love Book of war. There is no way to say what I didn't like without spoilers so here I go. Firstly the......more

I love this series SO SO MUCH!!! It has everything I love and I have loved each new book a little more. Melissa McShane has created a completely addictive world around a magical bookstore with an unlikely but so likable main character in Helena. An everywoman dropped into an extraordinary situation,......more

Of all the books in the series - I struggled with some of the authors choices in this one. I don’t love pretend deaths - and definitely not more than once. That said, I would have been wrecked if Malcolm had really died. I loved the inclusion and explanation that came for the “Sports” specifically wit......more
