Synopsis

Don’t miss the latest Natchez Burning novel, SOUTHERN MANFrom #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the second novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy—which also includes Natchez Burning and the upcoming Mississippi Blood—an epic trilogy of blood and race, family and justice, featuring Southern lawyer Penn Cage.Former prosecutor Penn Cage and his fiancée, reporter and publisher Caitlin Masters, have barely escaped with their lives after being attacked by wealthy businessman Brody Royal and his Double Eagles, a KKK sect with ties to some of Mississippi’s most powerful men. But the real danger has only begun as FBI Special Agent John Kaiser warns Penn that Brody wasn’t the true leader of the Double Eagles. The puppeteer who actually controls the terrorist group is a man far more fearsome: the chief of the state police’s Criminal Investigations Bureau, Forrest Knox. The only way Penn can save his father, Dr. Tom Cage—who is fleeing a murder charge as well as corrupt cops bent on killing him—is either to make a devil’s bargain with Knox or destroy him. While Penn desperately pursues both options, Caitlin uncovers the real story behind a series of unsolved civil rights murders that may hold the key to the Double Eagles’ downfall. The trail leads her deep into the past, into the black backwaters of the Mississippi River, to a secret killing ground used by slave owners and the Klan for over two hundred years . . . a place of terrifying evil known only as “the bone tree.”The Bone Tree is an explosive, action-packed thriller full of twisting intrigue and deadly secrets, a tale that explores the conflicts and casualties that result when the darkest truths of American history come to light. It puts us inside the skin of a noble man who has always fought for justice—now finally pushed beyond his limits.Just how far will Penn Cage, the hero we thought we knew, go to protect those he loves?

About Greg Iles

Author, Greg Iles, even though born in Germany, grew up in Natchez, Mississippi. His father was a physician who was the Supervisor of the U.S. Embassy Medical Clinic, in Stuttgart, Germany. Being raised in Natchez, most of his novels were set in that area.

Greg graduated from the University of Mississippi and was active in a band called, "Frankly Scarlett"........ assuming taken from the most famous line of Rhett Butler in the movie, "Gone With the Wind". The band was somewhat successful, but Iles decided not to tour because of time spent away from family. With more time post band, Greg began writing. Since he also wrote lyrics, it was a convenient transition from song writing to novels.

His first novel was, "Spandau Phoenix", a suspense thriller about Nazis, Rudolf Hess. Then came the screenplay, "24 Hours", that was rewritten and renamed, "Trapped". It was after that that Iles was seriously injured in an automobile accident. He lost a leg below the knee, and requiring a three-year recovery. In that time span he wrote a trilogy that was set in Natchez, which featured former prosecutor, Penn Cage.

Iles came full circle when he joined a band comprised of other authors......quite a who's who......Dave Barry, Ridley Pearson, Stephen King, Scott Turow, Amy Tan, MitchAlbom, Roy Blount, Jr., and James McBride. Iles lives in Natchez with his wife and three daughters.

This is the first time I'm reviewing any book in Goodreads. I liked the first Penn Cage book I read so continued with the series. I thought Natchez Burning was too long and had no idea it was part one of a trilogy til I was done and the story was left unresolved. I wasn't thrilled with it but decide......more

A stellar follow up to Natchez Burning. One of the best middle installments of a trilogy I have ever come across. The heart of these books is family - not just one family - several. And the deceit and lies they tell and the lengths they will go to love and protect their own. The Cage family (one tha......more

Loved Natchez Burning But Disappointed In The Bone Tree! I've been a big fan of Greg Iles since his first book, Spandau Phoenix, which was published over 20 years ago. One of my favorite of Iles' books is Natchez Burning, which is the massive-sized first installment of a trilogy. In my 5-star review......more

It takes immeasurable talent to follow up a massive page turner (the first of a planned trilogy) with another massive page turner that picks up immediately where the first left off and doesn't let you go until eight hundred pages later. It's exhausting to read, so I can't begin to imagine what went......more
