Synopsis

Mills autobiography deals primarily with the life of the mindbut a mind that ranks as one of the most remarkable and significant of the nineteenth century. The book memorably depicts the emergence of a brilliant child prodigy, the product of an extraordinary education that both hastened his development and brought him to the brink of suicide by the age of twentyone. Illumined with equal clarity is the story of Mills renewed commitment to life and of the further conflicts that marked his long evolution toward maturity as a major philosopher and social thinker. Superb in its dispassionate objectivity, the Autobiography stands as a work of enduring relevance and as a final testament to a rare and luminous intelligence.

About John Stuart Mill

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was a British political philosopher who wrote on such subjects as logic, economics, ethics, metaphysics, religion, and current affairs. His best-known works include On Liberty, Utilitarianism, The Subjection of Women, A System of Logic, Principles of Political Economy, and his autobiography. He was born in London, the eldest son of the Scottish philosopher, historian, and economist James Mill and educated by his father with the assistance of utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Mill's philosophy draws upon empiricism and utilitarianism while modifying these doctrines to incorporate a greater sense of humanity. A strong defender of freedom of thought and expression and an early supporter of the cause of women's rights, Mill remains a towering figure in the development of political liberalism.

Reading John Stuart Mill's life is like reading a book of fantasy. This man was to a very large extent a product of an experiment of his father - a child genius, a troubled man. I like this book for the same reason that I liked Justin Martyr's First Apology. The man seems so completely honest with h......more
