Synopsis

The job was 600 miles away from home and that made it perfect. It didnt even matter that Hank Hunnicutt had a reputation as a kook; he was, D.J. Abbot thought, merely eccentric. After all, didnt he surround himself with every selfproclaimed practitioner of the occult arts who came his way? The opportunity to spend some time on an Arizona ranch was everything a young graduate student trying to prove herself might want. And it wasuntil Hank suffered an accident, then disappeared. Suddenly, the guests were eyeing each otherand D.J.with fear and suspicion. Sometimes Elizabeth Peters reminds me strangely of Diana Wynne Jones ... esp. this book, which has several very Deep Secret moments, such as the eccentric convention of odd characters. Anthropology grad student D.J. Abbott is a master procrastinator. She has left finding a summer job so late than when she sees her advisor about it, all that's left is an offer from well-known crackpot millionaire Hank Hunnicutt, who seems to believe in every weird theory floating about. Since it's......more

She is, after all, a new anthropologist trying to establish herself. Getting establishing in academia still isn't easy, but as readers can see from Peters' book, it......more

It might be because the plot is pretty slow in the beginning and doesn't really pick up until the last third. But the book makes up for it by the strength of its characters. These people are hila......more
