Synopsis

Here together for the first time on CD are the three mysteries that started it all, introducing sexy, savvy ex-cop turned P.I. Kinsey Millhone to listeners everywhere…

“A” Is for Alibi
Nikki Fife, convicted of murdering her husband Laurence, is out on parole after eight years of prison. Now, she hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed Laurence. The trail will twist and turn until finally turning back on itself, bringing Kinsey face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

“B” Is for Burglar
Elaine Boldt is missing, and her sister wants Kinsey Millhone to find her. It seems to be a routine job–until Kinsey is ordered to drop the investigation just as she discovers that days before Elaine’s disappearance, her next-door neighbor and bridge partner had been murdered. Now, the killer is still at large . . . and looking for Kinsey.

“C” Is for Corpse
Kinsey Millhone is recruited to help Bobby Callahan, a young man struggling back to life after his Porsche was forced to take a near-fatal nose dive over the edge of a canyon. Three days later Bobby is dead and Kinsey must capture a cold-blooded killer before he strikes again.

About Sue Grafton

A contemporary American author of detective novels, Sue Taylor Grafton, was born in Louisville, Kentucky as the daughter of another detective novelist, C. W. Grafton. Even though her father had an influence, she has commented that her biggest influence came from author Ross MacDonald.

Sue received her bachelor's degree from University of Louisville in English literature, humanities, and fine art. Upon graduation, Sue worked as a hospital admissions clerk, cashier, and medical secretary. She wrote several novels that were not successful.

After moving into writing screenplays for television, Sue became interested in novels that carried a central theme through each title. She saw a book that alphabetized methods of murder, and immediately started writing what became her best-known works, "the alphabet novels". Each story is set around a fictional California town based on Santa Barbara. The novels are written from the perspective of a female investigator. After her G novel, Grafton was able to devote all of her time to writing her novels. She has given many refusals to those who wanted to buy her novels from which to make movies. She has no desire to work with Hollywood.

I've avoided Kinsey Millhone until now because I thought she might be a little cozy, but these first three entries hit the ground running as solid PI stories with a good cast of characters in each and some perfectly acceptable plotting. I might have been half a beat ahead of Kinsey in the final thir......more

I read and reviewed the three books collected here separately, so this is basically for my own records. I rated them all as three stars, so the collected rating is (easily) the same. Looking at them as a group, I think I'm struck most by two things. The first is that, as the books go on, I'm increas......more

Kinsey Millhone is witty, cheeky, very VERY descriptive and smart. But that’s who she is, I noticed she gets sidetracked and describes somebody’s long nails and then ends it with an early memory which I actually enjoyed so much (I am that same way) the descriptions made me chuckle at points, and it......more

Reading about a single female detective Kinsey Millhone provided a fresh way for me to see how traditional roles for women have expanded in the last century. The suspense is not great since the solutions come into view without much effort on the part of the reader; however, I found myself intrigued......more
