Synopsis

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only “superpowers” are that I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I'm going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill—until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything—even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won't, can't, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

About Patricia Briggs

Montana born author, Patricia Briggs, has worked her way into a very successful author of fantasy novels. She chose to live mostly in the Pacific Northwest which is not typically the hotbed of authors, but she has managed to live a quieter life and still become a New York Times bestselling author. Her most famous series, Mercy Thompson and the Columbia Basin Pack, we're fictional residents of the area in which she resides, the Tri-Cities Washington.

From 1990 on, Briggs has published 17 novels beginning with traditional fantasy, then in 2006 moving to urban fantasy. A unique mark of her novels is that even in a series, each novel can serve as a stand-alone story without leaving the reader to wonder what happens next.

Briggs also writes the Alpha and Omega series, and they are set in the same environment as the Mercy Thomas series. The most recent of that series debuted in 2012, and came in at #4 on the NYT bestsellers list.

Briggs still lives in Washington state with her husband and children. They have a small herd of horses that they enjoy.

Hmmm. Ok, well. I definitely like this one better than the last one, but I'm starting to think I'm just not as into Mercy as I used to be. It's another good installment, and all hands are on deck to save the day! <--nothing wrong with any of that. I just think I'd rather read about the other characte......more

Ugh, the apocalypse sucks! Is anyone else actually getting LESS reading time? And this is the early part of the apocalypse. I am just saying right now that if running for our lives becomes a thing, I'm out. That's enough already. Sheesh! On the other hand.... if things go this way, I'm all in, baby! B......more

[4.5/5 stars] Smoke Bitten was superb! The plot was very engaging, involving the mystery of a body-snatching Smoke Creature, who’s identity I actually figured out around the same time as the main character. Go me!! But more importantly, I love it when books can get you involved in solving things out......more

Can I just say how much I absolutely detest manufactured conflict? Fake problems inserted into a stable couple because the author has no idea what to do now for a plot? Things that would be addressed by a simple conversation that a couple, prior to said hand from above inserting itself, would have d......more
