Synopsis

Silas Marner is an unhappy man who, after a romantic and social disappointment, flees his city and settles as a weaver in the village of Raveloe. There, he leads a quiet but solitary and rootless life, devoting himself entirely to work and saving money. One day, his savings vanish, and shortly afterward, as if by a twist of fate, an abandoned little girl appears, whom he decides to adopt. The care he gives her and her upbringing transform his life.

About George Eliot

George Eliot is the masculine pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), one of Victorian England's leading novelists. Her first stories appeared in Blackwood's magazine, followed by such novels as The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, and Middlemarch. Her work was popular with critics and the public alike, and in later years her novels were especially valued for their detailed portrayals of rural English life.
