Synopsis

Kosovo, 1999. In the shadow of an impending NATO bombing campaign, James Palatine of the Army Intelligence Corps has joined an elite unit of the SAS for his first mission behind enemy lines.A woman’s desperate cry for help draws them to a remote farmhouse, where Palatine makes a split-second decision that he bitterly regrets. Just hours later he sees a chance to redeem himself—in his own eyes, at least—when his unit finds a young girl close to death in the freezing woods. But rescuing the girl proves only to be the beginning of a new nightmare.Against a backdrop of escalating violence, Palatine’s life spirals into an underworld of predatory gangsters and duplicitous spies—and takes him on a journey deep into the horrors of war and the darkness within his own soul.

Goodreads review by Rachel

Very realistic action, characters and storyline. It was hard to read at times, and even ( in my humble opinion only) was a bit dragging in parts. I won through goodreads and many thanks for choosing me as your winner.......more

I really enjoyed this book. Very realistic action and behavior from the characters, enough intrigue to stick with it. Highly recommend this for fans of the old Deighton or Le Carre books.......more

Quotes

Praise for Say a Little Prayer“Giles O’Bryen presents the complexities of the [Kosovo] conflict with scrupulous impartiality, while never neglecting the bouts of bone-crunching that make this such a thrilling read. There are baddies galore…and a horribly ironic twist. A wise old soldier explains: ‘Gangs, tribes, races and nations—they all need to do some killing every so often.’ And, as Graham Greene might have said, they need ‘murderous bastards’ such as James Palatine to do it.” London Evening Standard“Dark and intelligent…” —Crime ReviewPraise for Little Sister“Giles O’Bryen clearly knows which buttons to press in this his first thriller…The unusual main location—the Western Sahara—is described in all its terrible beauty and political complexity, thus adding depth to a standard twisty tale of duplicitous spooks and greedy crooks. James’s alliance with a pair of Ukrainian goons is especially horrifying and hilarious…More please.” London Evening Standard“Featuring spies, black humour and suspense, it’s a novel that is almost impossible to put down…It’s dark, tense and the politics of the Western Sahara are fascinating.” Pure M
