Synopsis

Life sucks, and then you die. Or, if you’re James Stark, you spend eleven years in Hell as a hitman before finally escaping, only to land back in the hell-on-earth that is Los Angeles. Now Stark’s back, and ready for revenge. And absolution, and maybe even love. But when his first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than you’d expect, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future. Resurrection sucks. Saving the world is worse. Darkly twisted, irreverent, and completely hilarious, Sandman Slim is the breakthrough novel by an acclaimed author.

MacLeod Andrews's performance is excellent! Each character clearly has their own voice and Andrews seems able to do any accent. Too bad booksfree.com doesn't give the narrator credit for reading the audiobook. Another review states the desire for Ron Perlman to play Sandman Slim in a movie version of the book. Lets hope not. The story takes place between Christmas and New Years in LA, eleven years after nineteen year old Magician Jimmy Stark was trapped in hell, by six magicians he called friends. Stark narrates the story and he swears. A lot. He also eats, sleeps and changes his clothes. In a lot of these books the hero runs amock and never does anything human even though they are. This adds a lot to the Stark character. Richard Kadrey the author of Sandman Slim has given us a thirty year old character with the knowledge and education of a fifty year old. Was all of this education aquired in hell? Stark is all over the place with quotes and titles from songs, books and films. There are times in the story when you wish Stark would just shut up and stop being a philosopher. Stark and his friends are likable and I will read the second book KILL THE DEAD. There was enough of a cliff hanger and I'm curious. If you like Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden and Charlie Houston's Joe Pitts. You should like Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim. No reason you need me to give you the same information other reviews have. NOTE...In the beginning of the story you meet a black female character. We are told she doesn't have any hair. Later in the story someone grabs her hair. Kadrey also puts this female character in the beginning of a storyline when they meet the guy on the thirteen floor for the first time. Then he doesn't give her an exit. She just doesn't talk anymore. Considering how over detailed this book is these two things with the same character are odd.
