Synopsis

Internationally acclaimed author John Mortimer returns with a richly entertaining volume of six stories featuring Britain’s most comic, courageous, and corpulent barrister, Horace Rumpole. Many know the colorful character through theimmensely popular PBS television series, Rumpole of the Bailey. This delightful collection of short stories expands the Rumpole legend. In these tales, Rumpole’s wry humor is deftly augmented by a new voice: that of his wife, Hilda. In Hilda’s Story, She Who Must Be Obeyed turns an uncompromising eye on Rumpole’s idiosyncrasies. In another first, Rumpole unleashes his courtroom demeanor on the European Court of Human Rights in Rumpole and the Rights of Man.Stories include: Rumpole and the Model Prisoner; Rumpole and the Way Through the Woods; Hilda’s Story; Rumpole and the Little Boy Lost; Rumpole and the Rights of Man; and Rumpole and the Angel of Death. The San Francisco Chronicle praises John Mortimer as “one of the immortals of mystery fiction.”
