Synopsis

Mavra Chang was once a master criminal, notorious throughout the galaxy. But for eleven long years she has been trapped in a nonhuman body on the Well Worldthe master control planet for the universe, where untold numbers of strange races exist, separated by barriers erected by the mysterious, vanished race that built the Well World billions of years ago. Orbiting the planet is a planetoid concealing Obie, a supercomputer that could restore Mavra Chang to her original formif she can reach it. Unfortunately, the only spaceship on the planet is hidden in the northern hemisphere, a place no living creature can survive. She soon learns that her enemies are plotting to eliminate her, steal the ship, and escape from the Well World.But many others have planned her demise before, and Mavra Chang is still alive and wellwhich is more than can be said of those who once wished her ill.

About Jack L. Chalker

Jack L. Chalker (1944–2005) was born in Baltimore. While still in high school, he began writing for the amateur science fiction press, and in 1960 he launched the Hugo-nominated amateur magazine Mirage. A year later he founded Mirage Press, which grew into a major specialty publisher of nonfiction and reference books on science fiction and fantasy. His first novel, A Jungle of Stars, was published in 1976, and he became a full-time novelist two years later with the popular success of Midnight at the Well of Souls. Chalker was also a noted speaker on science fiction and fantasy at numerous colleges and universities and at the Smithsonian Institution. His awards include the Skylark Award, the Daedalus Award, the Hamilton-Brackett Memorial
Award, and the Gold Medal of the West Coast Review of Books. He was twice nominated for both the John W. Campbell Award and the
Hugo Award. In 2005 he was posthumously presented the Phoenix Award of the Southern
Fandom Confederation.

As Chalker mentions in a brief introduction, the Quest for the Well of Souls is really the second half of a novel he called Wars of the Well, the first part being Exiles of he Well of Souls, with Midnight at the Well of Souls being a prequel.
