ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION
The nation is stunned silent when presidential hopeful James Kilcannon is shot dead in front of his rock-star girlfriend Stacy Tarrant. Fiercely independent attorney Tony Lord dares to defend the shooter, but the already bizarre plot takes another twist. As America watches, a mysterious and ruthless figure, known only as Phoenix, takes to the airwaves-- and takes the wife of a wealthy newspaper mogul and Stacy's manager as his hostages. Phoenix mounts a televised trial of his own--in which Stacy Tarrant and Tony Lord are helpless defendents, millions of viewers are jurors, and--unless his chilling demands are met--Pheonix is the unstoppable executioner....

About The Author

Richard North Patterson’s eleven novels include seven consecutive international bestsellers; critics compared his most recent novel, Protect and Defend, to such novels as Allen Drury’s Advise and Consent and Gore Vidal’s Lincoln. Formerly a trial lawyer, Mr. Patterson served as the SEC’s liaison to the Watergate Special Prosecutor, and is now on the boards of several Washington-based advocacy groups dealing with gun violence, political reform, and reproductive rights. He lives with his wife, Laurie, and their family on Martha’s Vineyard.

This book was great after the first hundred and fifty pages. My major complaint about the story is the use of flashback with no warning. Along those lines, Patterson included WAY too much backstory. I felt like he would have done better to write this story in two installments. The trial and the init......more

Lots of plot twists, maybe too twisty at times, but overall an absorbing read. Some well-developed characters, but some very one-dimensional, eg. Lord’s wife’s petty narcissism. Was it only to give him the excuse to stray? Great Bay Area location. A lot of coincidences, convenient for moving the sto......more
