Synopsis

Eben Adams is a young painter in Depression-era New York just looking to make a living. His work has thus far left influential art dealers unimpressed. Then Eben happens upon a young schoolgirl named Jennie in Central Park. Intrigued by her mystical quality and her knowledge of things that happened well before her time, Eben begins to sketch a portrait of the young girl. The drawing turns out to be the most emotional piece Eben has ever done, and he finally gets the boost in his career hes been seeking. But before he can finish the portrait, Jennie vanishes. Saddened by the loss of his muse, he begins to scour the city for her, and when he does find her again, he is shocked to discover that she has aged several years since their last meeting. Who is this girl, and where did she come from? This supernatural love story is a masterpiece of modern fantasy.

About Robert Nathan

Robert Nathan
(1894–1985) was born in New York City and educated at private schools in the
United States and Switzerland. While attending Harvard, where he was a
classmate of E. E. Cummings, he was an editor of the Harvard Monthly, in which his first stories and poems appeared.
After becoming a full-time writer, Nathan’s work strengthened his reputation
with both the public and peers. F. Scott Fitzgerald once referred to Nathan as
his favorite writer. Five of his novels have been made into films, including Portrait of Jennie and The Bishop’s Wife. Nathan ultimately
authored more than fifty volumes of novels, poetry, and plays, and from this
body of distinguished work he acquired a reputation as a master of satiric
fantasy.

Last night I finished reading this gothic love story, or rather ghost story, I don’t know how to define it. What a wonder, what a delicacy the narration of Robert Nathan, I was bewitched by the dry but precise descriptions of the human heart and the human effort of living the daily life. The delicate......more
