This early, autobiographical novel by P. G. Wodehouse aptly describes the perils of a writers world in London circa 1900. The protagonist, an author manqu, attempts by any means necessary to establish himself in literary circles. But his subterfuges backfire, his amours come a cropper, and only an ingenious, beguiling denouement saves his skin.
