Synopsis

A first-contact novel written from an alien perspective by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Ryo is one of the Thranx, a race of social arthropods. From his larval years to now, his life has been normal, though his love of learning and insatiable curiosity set him apart. He has settled into his work as an agriculture specialist and is premated to a lovely female. Yet Ryo still feels something is missing from his life, and when he heroically defends his colony from the Thranx's reptilian nemesis, Ryo gets a taste of excitement that's hard to forget.

Then his premate shares a garbled message from her starship-captain cousin—one that hints at the discovery of a completely new, completely alien space-going intelligence. Even when the captain backtracks and denounces the experience as a deep-space nightmare, Ryo can't let it go. He becomes obsessed, leaving his colony and family behind to chase rumors of a murderous alien race, horrible beyond imagining. And when he finally makes it to an isolated military outpost rumored to harbor the captured aliens, he comes face-to-face with . . . humanity.

Alan Dean Foster does solid work. He has been the go-to guy for movie adaptations since the '70s or early '80s. Admittedly, I've tried reading his work before, but it was based on a movie and I ended up putting down the book to rewatch the movie. But maybe I will try one of his adaptations again now......more

This was the first book I ever read by Alan Dean Foster. I had perhaps an unusual reaction to this book. I really, really loved this book. Perhaps he didn't mean to be that powerful, but I was really touched by it. It is the story of the First Contact between two sentient races, the Thranx and the H......more

This is an excellent first-contact kind of novel, set early in Foster's Humanx Commonwealth continuity. Ryo is one of Foster's best characters, and answers Campbell's challenge of creating an alien character who thinks as well as a man, but not -like- a man. It's not necessary to have read any of th......more

My introduction to Alan Dean Foster's Commonwealth Universe. I picked this book up from the giveaway pile at my high school library about 10 years ago, though it wasn't until a few years later that I got around to reading it. When I picked it up, the kid who had picked it up before me dismissed it an......more

I’ve seen this book around for years and always passed it up, finally reading it changed my opinion on Alan Dean Foster. I always thought of him as the movie tie-in guy but this book was really interesting. It’s a first contact book between humans and giant bugs called the thranx. It’s got an intere......more
