Synopsis

Manhattan assistant district attorney Roger "Butch" Karp has been around New York long enough to realize that the judicial system can be dirty and cynical. But he still believes in justice. So when a vicious sociopath tries to dodge a brutal murder charge by convincing the court he is incompetent to stand trial, Karp teams up with firecracker assistant DA Marlene Ciampi to unleash the full force of their relentless energy, hardboiled wit, and passion for the truth to put the killer away for good. They will accept no lesser plea.

Goodreads review by Mary JL

This is the first book in the series featuring Bruce Karp, NYC Assistant District Attorney, and his lover, Marlene Ciampi. This series has run for 23 books; so naturally they all vary a bit in quality. This was a solid 3 star legal thriller. Adequate plot, interesting characters and good pacing. Not......more

This is the first book in a long series (23 books?) & I almost abandoned it. It suffers from the ills of many first of series books such as far too many info dumps & back stories on the characters. The sex scenes were fairly ludicrous & one scene was completely out of place. (view spoiler)[ A hooker finds the mone (hide spoiler)]......more

Goodreads review by Brian

I had never heard of this series until a Goodreads friend suggested #4 in the series, so I figured I would start from the first and if I liked it, keep reading. Heck if I liked them that would give me 25 books to read in the series. While the main character Butch Karp is a very good character, this......more

Quotes

“Exceptionally good…Tanenbaum has infused this book with a strong collection of characters, a raunchy energy that crackles in the out-of-office lawyer talk, and a basic sense of outrage at a system that is failing miserably.” Publishers Weekly

“As it explores Karp’s private life and colorful coworkers, this fascinating, realistic novel addresses several legal issues: plea bargaining, overcrowded dockets, and the insanity defense.” Library Journal
