Synopsis

Whether you are a doctor, nurse, student, or otherwise interested listener, the stories here will help you to understand how medicine works and how medical error can happen. The lifelong process of learning that is a medical career requires healthcare workers to find a way to live through these setbacks without either becoming too adept at putting them 'down to experience' and forgetting their social significance, or 'burning out' and leaving medicine.

The stories and discussions here present detailed narratives, analyses, and reflections on medical errors through actions, omissions, and misunderstandings. They offer a uniquely honest perspective on the social implications of medical error and will enable healthcare workers at all levels to analyze and learn from it without losing sight of its impact.

About Philip Berry

Philip Berry is a writer and a practicing NHS doctor. His projects include a series of novellas about Dr. Stephen Isso, a medical examiner working in the expanded human 'envelope' 500 years from now. Insensate and Ignaz combine medical thriller and science fiction.

He also published a series of books for children, called All The Pieces. They are written to grow with children as their reading skills advance, starting easy and moving towards a fairly sophisticated finale. All The Pieces sees its heroine Tamsin visit multiple historical events in her battle against the Stone Splitters.

Proximity and Extremis are medical thrillers, concerning assisted dying and euthanasia. Many of his flash and short fiction pieces have appeared online, in magazines, or in anthologies. His short story collections include: Bonewhite Light, Flicker-lit, and Malady/Therapy.

For eight years Philip has written for the blog Illusions of Autonomy, exploring many difficult and controversial aspects of modern medicine. The articles have been collected into several volumes.

Philip lives in London.
