Synopsis

Claire Malloy—Arkansas bookseller and widowed mother—after a long courtship has finally said "I do" to her swain, Lieutenant Peter Rosen. Now they are on their honeymoon in Luxor, Egypt. That is, Claire is on her honeymoon—accompanied by Caron, her teenaged daughter, and Inez, Caron's best friend and frequent partner in adventure. Peter is mostly away on various mysterious consultations with equally mysterious government agencies for his new mysterious job. Claire is intent on a quiet, uneventful honeymoon, but things go from bucolic to creepy, when Caron and Inez are chased through darkened deserted alleys, by persons unknown, and a student of their acquaintance is kidnapped by two young men on horseback in a scene reminiscent of a Valentino film. Something is clearly afoot in this tourist paradise, and Claire will stop at nothing to find out what it is.

Every good author periodically writes a clinker, and this is Ms. Hess's example. I have loved most of her Malloy and Maggody books. Not so here. I finished it, basically because I expected it would improve. Now, I am waiting for her next one to see if she returns to form.......more

A little slow-moving to start but overall an enjoyable read. It's also, sadly, the last book Joan Hess wrote in this series.......more

Maybe because I listened on audio, I found Mummy Dearest hard to follow with too many characters I didn't care about and multiple indistinct crimes which barely seemed related.......more

Ha Ha Ha -- I picked a bag full of discarded Joan Hess mysteries from the giveaway table recently at the Winona, Miss., library; today, I finished reading this one, "Mummy Dearest", a good example of the Hess witty writing style; set in Luxor, Egypt, as our heroine and her new husband, along with tw......more

Peter has been trained in international copspeak in order to go on special assignment in Egypt, so that is where he and Claire spend their honeymoon. Unfortunately, much of their honeymo......more

Quotes

“Delightful…A heady mix a deliciously eccentric cast of supporting characters…Manipulating everything with a practiced hand, Hess concludes the story in a manner worthy of Hercule Poirot in the classic Death on the Nile.”

Publishers Weekly

“Humor, quirky characters, a rich mother-daughter relationship, and the fresh setting all add to this satisfying addition to Hess’ long-running series.”

Booklist

“An eccentric international cast of characters is professionally dramatized by C. J. Critt…In this story only a few characters are who they purport to be, so listeners will enjoy puzzling out not only whodunit but the real identity of each masquerader. Critt makes listeners believe she is personally involved in the story and ratchets up the intensity as people are kidnapped and Claire investigates. Together Critt’s evocative narration and talent for accents create a convincing listening experience. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award.”

AudioFile

“This enjoyable mystery in Hess’ long-running Claire Malloy series takes the reader along for the ride as Claire honeymoons in Egypt…A splendidly wicked honeymoon.”
