Synopsis

This somewhat unpleasant tale, published as a novelette in the Smart Set in July 1920, relates a series of events that took place in the spring of the previous year. Each of the three events made a great impression upon F. Scott Fitzgerald. In life they were unrelated, except by the general hysteria of that spring which inaugurated the Age of Jazz, but in this story, he has tried to weave them into a patterna pattern which would give the effect of those months in New York as they appeared to at least one member of what was then the younger generation.

About F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1896. He attended Princeton University, joined the United States Army during World War I, and published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in 1920. That same year he married Zelda Sayre and for the next decade the couple lived in New York, Paris, and on the Riviera. Fitzgerald's masterpieces include The Beautiful and the Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night. He died at the age of forty-four while working on The Last Tycoon. Fitzgerald's fiction has secured his reputation as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century.

I think everyone should read this. It will give you a memorab......more

An interesting read. I was easily and quickly pulled in at the beginning. It is clearly a Fitzgerald book based with his very clear and distinctive way of describing people and settings. It goes through the course of two days with a cast of people. (Almost) each chapter switches to a new character a......more

I read this because of the title. It's set on May Day 1919 (and was published the following year) and I thought it might make a nice read as I prepare for May Day 2018. Turns out the story doesn't have much to do with May Day per se. There is a political theme of class tension that runs throughout,......more
