Book One in the Magic Kingdom of Landover Series Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor. To put a final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to a duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win. The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . .

I have read theentire Landover series and it is just simply awesome. I was enthralled from the moment I started reading the story. The imagination of Terry Brooks astounds me. Whoever would have thought of this idea other than Terry Brooks?! This is truly an amazing book and I highly recommend it. It's a great book to just take you away from the every day stress of like. Well worth the read.

I'm 29 and I think this book is great. It is the perfect balance between cutesy kid friendly, and suspenseful chaotic action that an adult readers love. If you are an avid reader who either has a young child that also likes to read or has a child you would like to see get interested in reading, then read this book together. You will both LOVE IT!

This book kept me interested through to the end...gladly there are more to continue the story...I can hardly wait to receive the next book of the series. This fantasy has just about everything in it a reader needs to escape reality. A lawyer, who has recently lost his wife and is miserable and bored with life without her, buys a magical island, through a magazine article. When he gets to this magical place, he strives to become king in a world that isn't in our world, but has dragons, witches, magicians and all sorts of fantastical beings. His challenge is to convince the dwellers of this kingdom that he will be their next king, restore the island from its decaying condition and he seeks their allegiance. All the dwellers are skeptical because he has not been the first man to try to become their king. He must prove himself brave and determined before they will give their allegiance. Each group of people or tribes, have their own conditions for him before they will pledge their allegiance. I love these kinds of mystical, magical stories with dragons, fairies, wizards, etc., and this story did not disappoint me. Its a very compelling story which keeps you interested to the end to see if the New King will succeed in his venture.
